For several decades the train bridges running above West Street and W. Fayette Street in Syracuse, New York were neglected. Over time the advertisements faded, the paint chipped, and the rust appeared. With no funds from the city, and no interest from the train company to paint the bridges, the residents of Syracuse came to accept these iron hulks as a symbol for their struggling city. Over the past five years the city of Syracuse has begun to see a mini-renaissance. During those several years downtown grew and expanded but the community adjacent to it remained the poorest area in the city. The goal of the project is to ultimately bridge the Near Westside community to downtown by using the arts, with a social consciousness, to awaken these intersections.
